FRIARS DEAL FREEL

LATE BREAKING NEWS

LATE BREAKING NEWS

The St. Francis Friars have dealt utility man Ryan Freel to the Darwin Finches for underachieving reliever Brandon Lyon. Freel became expendable in St. Francis as Ben Zobrist went from benchwarmer to regular, and the club is probably also interested in finding playing time for Alexei Ramirez, who is still biding his time in the minors.

The Finches get a guy who can play multiple positions, including the OF, where the club lacks depth and is challenged by injuries to superstar Josh Hamilton. St. Francis, on the other hand, gets a guy that has been given a chance to close in the past with mixed results and is probably 6 or 7 on the Finches depth chart.

PITCHING DEPTH IN DARWIN?

Lyon was expendable to Darwin with guys like Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer and Jonathan Sanchez not getting a chance to start. Scherzer was recently promoted to fill the roster spot of the sidelined (and largely ineffective) Scott Kazmir, but neither he nor the other young hurlers will get the first shot at the fifth starter's job. Instead, Darwin GM Ryan O'Connor confirmed that he would place veteran knuckleballer Tim Wakefield in the rotation for now. Where would Darwin be if both Kazmir and Oliver Perez were healthy and effective, and what will the Finches do when John Smoltz becomes eligible to pitch again, as is expected? In potential, the club has an embarassment of pitching riches which could serve them well after the All-Star Break, when most clubs will be looking for help.

FRIARS NOT HAPPY WITH FREEL

As reported here
, St. Francis had other issues with Freel and wanted to move his attitude and salary off the roster.
