That lovable character, the GM of the Arizona D-Backs, maintained his reputation as the GM most likely to shake things up by essentially agreeing to three deals prior to the end of June (in which he had already traded), thus assuring the league of much player movement in the first week of June.
In the first deal, the D-Backs acquired RHP Diasuke Matsuzaka, 3B Alex Gordon, and OF Chris Young from Eastern contender Frostbite Falls. In return, Arizona decided to move the highly-talented but also highly-salaried CF Carlos Beltran, along with LHP Rich Hill, 3B Evan Longoria, RHP Matt Garza, and a player to be named at the end of the season.

Of the players involved in this deal, Gordon and Longoria have yet to appear on a BARB roster, while Young, Matsuzaka and Hill have yet to have much of an impact. Beltran, on the other hand, was hitting 11 HR with 39 RBI, both second on the ballclub, and he led the D-Backs with 46 runs scored. The previous year, Beltran had hit .271 with 22 HR and 74 RBI in 134 games with Yuma before being dealt to their arch-rival.

In the second deal, Arizona shipped out veteran lefthander Andy Pettite to another Eastern contender, receiving promising young catcher Miguel Montero. Pettite was 8-13 with a 3.79 ERA last year in 30 starts between Las Vegas and Frostbite Falls, and he is 3-3 with a 3.47 ERA so far this season.

Brooklyn GM Eric Caskey has obviously not given up on the 2007 season: "Petitte's $8.75 million salary scared teams away, but makes Brooklyn so much better. No offense to Duke or Davies, but having Petitte in the fifth spot will help my desires to contend. Besides the price was right. Montero was a good player in the organization but didn't really find his spot. " Caskey insisted,"Yeah, we are worried about being 9 games back. Who wouldn't be? Hopefully, Petitte will stabilize my rotation and Davies and Duke can assist my team through long relief and the occasional spot start."
Perhaps, but other insiders suspect one or both of these last may well be on the trading block...

Unbelievable. How is this trade fair? Pettitte for Montero? Montero can't even beat out Chris Snyder (.219 AVG, 7 HR, 16 RBI) for the everyday role. This is a perfect example of an owner doing whatever it takes to aquire players from his favorite MLB team.
Also, according to you Ronald, Beltran is the best CF in the game, so why would you trade him? Longoria is just as good a prospect as Gordon, only Gordon is in the majors. Longoria will be up at the end of the season and could be the starter to start next season.

Rich Hill is a better pitcher than Matzuzaka anyway and is a lefty on one of the hottest teams in baseball and is younger. Real smart move.
Guess we dont have to worry about Arizona now guys. he shot himself in the foot.
Now, we have to worry about Frostbite again.
I feel like all the Eastern teams have improved themselves since the season began, and typically this involved acquiring pitching depth. This feels like a response to Darwin's improvement in the standings!
