Previously-untouchable veteran Tim Wakefield was tagged for eight runs in his third start of the year, ending a run of twelve-plus scoreless innings over his previous five appearances, and the Rebels made short work of the Darwin pen to turn the contest into a laugher, and an easy complete game-victory for ace Brandon Webb. David Wright, Carlos Lee and rookie Jarrod Saltalamacchia all homered, with ‘Salty’ scoring three times against his former club.
BROOKLYN 10, YUMA 2
WP: Chien-Mien Wang (2-3, 3.18)
LP: Carlos Zambrano (4-1, 4.24)
Brooklyn’s workhorse posted his second complete game of the young season after his teammates jumped on a wild (3 BB) Carlos Zambrano, knocking the previously-unbeaten ‘Z’ out of the box with eight runs in the first. Chase Utley led the Moabs offense, collecting three doubles among his four hits. The outburst moved Brooklyn two games above .500 (17-15) and just a half-game behind second-place Darwin.
BLACK MESA 11, FROSTBITE FALLS 2
WP: Justin Verlander (3-2, 4.65)
LP: Felix Hernandez (0-1, 4.26)
Justin Morneau went 5-for-5 with a pair of doubles to go with his sixth HR of the season, and Justin Verlander fanned twelve Squirrels in whipping the home team soundly, sending the club to its third straight loss at the curious expense of young Felix Hernandez, who so far has yet to win a game for his new club despite being among the league leaders in strikeouts. The win kept the surprising Anomalies a half-game ahead of the Rebels.
LAS VEGAS 7, OAKEYLAND 3
WP: Derek Lowe (2-2, 4.85)
LP: Dana Eveland (0-1, 22.50)
One day after combining for one of the worst-played games in league history, the Luchadores and Ballers played an error-free contest, in which both Jason Kubel and Alex Gordon hit two-run homers in the bottom of the Vegas lineup off rookie Dana Eveland. Derek Lowe pitched into the ninth to even his record, his only real mistake being a fifth-inning bomb hit by struggling Oakey CF Andruw Jones (.216). Only one game separates these two clubs from S-Mart, but the top three contenders in the Central are all below .500 . . .
POTTSYLVANIA 9, S-MART 1
WP: Cliff Lee (1-2, 4.54)
LP: John Maine (0-3, 4.10)
Aaron Hill hit a pair of RBI singles as part of a five-hit day, and Cliff Lee worked eight strong innings to earn his first win of the season as the Creepers (9-21) took advantage of the absence of injured 3B Alex Rodriguez from the Boom Sticks’ lineup, which appears vulnerable to good lefties at the bottom of the order.
