RON BEING REPLACED?

Does BARB have a new trade-happy owner? James Herndon hopes not.

After feeling a "Ronald Melkonian-esque itch" to deal a player a few weeks ago (although the trade ultimately fell through), the New England GM apologized for "pulling a Ronald" in organizing a three-way deal that supplied his team with more power in the outfield and on the mound.

Herndon was forced to engineer two separate trades into a single three-way deal because he had already completed two trades in the month of May (both in the first few days of the month). But, to the surprise of many, he pulled it off.

The Yankee Stompers, with various players going on the disabled list, swung a deal with the Sin City Cowboys and AC/BC and brought in powerful righty Max Scherzer and athletic fly chaser Corey Hart.

The price, however, was high. Five players left the New England farm system, including two who were just acquired in a trade with Brooklyn.

AC/BC, which sent Scherzer to New England, received a steady reliever, RHP Matt Capps, and young lefties Brian Duensing and Chad James. Capps and Duensing came from Sin City.

Sin City, the provider of Hart, got a passel of prospects in young catcher Alex Avila, shortstop Christian Colon, and right-handers Chris Tillman and Anthony Renaudo.

"It's always tough to give up top prospects," Herndon said. "But when you can acquire both a power right fielder like Hart and a stud in Scherzer, how can you say no?"

Scherzer is expected to be New England's number 2 starter before sliding to #3 when Adam Wainwright returns in 2012.

Anthony Guerra and Alex Coffman were satisfied with their hauls, but neither made public comment.

Nice post, interesting moves. I thought the signings of Jason Kubel and Scott Baker were especially significant....New England made a bold move.

But let's get real: there is only ONE Ronald!

I am thoroughly ashamed of my inability to resist the signing of Chris Young only to have him go on the DL 10 days later.

Hey, I signed Izturis and he's having surgery....maybe I get him back, maybe not...though truth to tell he's 3/4 on the IF depth chart, depending on the position. Still, I could've used his slot to sign someone else...so...yeah
