GAME DAY 108

GAME DAY 108

CASSELTON 5, TEXAS 4

WP: John Lackey (7-6, 4.87)
LP: Javier Vazquez (6-7, 5.01)
SV: Jenks (18)

Mike Napoli snapped an 0-for17 slide with a pair of RBI hits, including an eighth-inning single that gave the Horned Toads (57-50) the lead as Bobby Jenks shook off a couple of recent blown saves to fan three of the four Tornadoes he faced.

DARWIN 5, FRESNO 2

WP: Max Scherzer (3-3, 5.45)
LP: Josh Beckett (8-8, 4.12)
SV: Gregg (13)

Kevin Gregg worked his fourth straight game and earned his third straight save as the streaking Finches reached the 60-win mark at the expense of Josh Beckett and the host Regulators. Beckett had outlasted another Josh (Johnson), who needed a bailout in the sixth. Inconsistent Max Scherzer was money this time, fanning the left-handed-hitting Adrian Gonzalez for the hold. New Regulators C Jorge Posada had a pair of hits and two ribbies in his first start with his new ball club . . .

ST. FRANCIS 18, POTTSYLVANIA 10

WP: George Sherrill (3-3, 5.17)
LP: Brian Fuentes (1-5, 4.77)

The Friars, trailing 10-5 after six innings, erupted for a season-high 13 runs in their last two at-bats against Creepers pitching, which eventually became so tortured (a seven-run ninth!) that IF Erick Aybar took a turn on the mound. Felipe Lopez drove in five runs with four hits, including his fourth shot of the year, and both Scott Hairston and Brandon Inge came off the bench to get key hits in the barrage that followed.

BROOKLYN 5, YUMA 4

WP: Matt Lindstrom (6-1, 4.07)
LP: Hong-Chih-Kuo (2-2, 3.91)

Given a rare save opportunity, lefty Hong-Chih-Kuo not only blew the save, but lost a game that had featured an interesting duel between frosh starters Chris Volstad and Johnny Cueto. Each worked into the sixth having allowed only two earned runs to that point, but it was Lindstrom who drew the long straw, with Miguel Cabrera delivering the go-ahead run with an 8th-inning RBI single. Brooklyn (62-51) remains just three games out of first in the East and the loss drops Yuma into a tie with the Moabs for two games out in the wild card race.

FROSTBITE FALLS 5, BLACK MESA 4

WP: Felix Hernandez (7-7, 3.88)
LP: Ricky Romero (0-1, 6.52)

J.J. Hardy, fighting to keep his starting shortstop job, smacked his fifth boundary belt of the year one inning after Jayson Werth’s two-run triple had tied the ball game off rookie starter Ricky Romero. With the win, Frostbite Falls (64-49) has now bagged six straight contests to take over sole possession of the lead in the wild card race, and in the process inched ahead of Brooklyn in the divisional standings.
