MOABS STREAK HITS TEN, JUST ONE GAME OFF IN EAST

MOABS STREAK HITS TEN, JUST ONE GAME OFF IN EAST

Brooklyn—Like a phoenix risen from the ashes, the Brooklyn Moabs continue to play their finest ball of the year in late summer, taking an 8-3 decision rather handily from the free-falling PF Flyers and moving within one game of sibling rival Worcester in the Eastern Division.

This time, it was unheralded rookie reliever Jose Mijares who got the clubhouse plaudits, as the frosh fireballer went three innings to qualify for a save in relief of Jon Lester (8-8, 3.40), who was effective but wild. Another rookie, Los Angeles RHP Jordan Zimmerman, continued to develop at the big-league level but without the results, as he fell to 0-6, 8.53 after coughing up a grand slam to Chase Utley. It was the 23rd blast of the year for Utley, who got to bat with two out when a Jim Thome error kept the inning alive.

With the win, Brooklyn (52-40) moved within a game of East-leading Worcester, as it has been the Moabs who have taken best advantage of home-and-away series with the (arguably) less-talented teams of the Central Division. And with more Central foes on the gamecard for the next few weeks, the Moabs have to be feeling pretty good about their chances despite having no starters with wins in double figures and an up-and-down rookie (Chris Volstad) learning on the job in the rotation.

In other BARB action:

FRESNO 7, ST. FRANCIS 4

WP: Mike Pelfrey (8-7, 5.04)

LP: Edwin Jackson (5-8, 5.87)

Brandon Phillips smacked a bases-loaded triple, and Mike Pelfrey went all the way against a staggering Friars lineup as the Regulators won for the 13th time in their last 17 games amid rumors of another possible shakeup in their roster.

BLACK MESA 12, MADTOWN 6

WP: Ted Lilly (5-6, 5.72)

LP: A.J. Burnett (5-7, 4.70)

SV: Hoffman (1)

Justin Morneau and Ian Kinsler both took A.J. Burnett deep, and Trevor Hoffman (signed off the scrap heap), picked up his first save of 2009 in a rare off-day for Jonathan Papelbon as the Anomalies (41-45) avoided a losing road trip by taking a getaway game from the host Murlocs.

TEXAS 3, WORCESTER 1

WP: Tomm
ie Hanson (2-1, 3.05)
LP: Jeremy Guthrie (5-7, 4.84)

SV: Gonzalez (5)

Jeremy Guthrie pitched well, going the distance, but the combo of rookie Tommie Hansen and lefty Mike Gonzalez pitched better as the Tornadoes bunched some singles in the fourth to plate some runs, then made the slim lead stand up, improving to 35-51.

No team is as good as their winning or losing streak would indicate... so Worcester must still be considered front runners.
