In a deal that can only be described as head-scratching, the Frostbite Falls Flying Squirrels dealt for a spectacular (but injury-plagued) shortstop and a prospect. The price from their trade partner, the Pottsylvania Creepers? A spectacular (but injury-plagued) starting pitcher, a hard-throwing relief pitcher and a player to be named!
Here's a thumbnail sketch of the deal: the Creepers send SS Jose Ryes and OF/DH Adam Lind in exchange for RHP Carlos Marmol, RHP Ben Sheets and the aforementioned PTBN. To Creepers GM Jeff Moore, the deal provides a "much-needed boost to our pen that will, hopefully, solidify us for a stretch run. Sheets will hopefully factor in our rotation in the future and we are excited about our PTBN!"
This is at least plausible, though who knows if Sheets will ever be a regular member of a big-league rotation again...or if Reyes will play this season. It's all up in the air, which makes the deal more than a bit mysterious. To make matters more confounding, the Squirrels called up minor-league free agent Jason Frasor to fill the departed Marmol's slot in the bullpen. Frasor is a player any team could've signed for the league minimum back in the spring, so he appears to be a fill-in, at best.
FLYERS PICK UP PAIR
The Los Angeles PF Flyers have reunited with former starting RF J.D. Drew, who was released a few days ago by the Black Mesa Anomalies after a so-so 2009 campaign after signing as a free agent. The Flyers also added released Black Mesa reliever Humberto Sanchez.
In other BARB action:
ST. FRANCIS 3, BROOKLYN 1
WP: Gavin Floyd (4-9, 5.01)
LP: Jon Lester (6-8, 3.42)
Gavin Floyd went the distance, allowing just five hits, while Casey Blake's seventh boundary belt of the season gave the Friars the early lead that Floyd needed as St. Francis avoided padding their BARB-leading total of losses for at least one day.
TEXAS 3, FROSTBITE FALLS 2
WP: Tommy Hanson (1-1, 3.68)
LP: Joakim Soria (2-3, 3.89)
SV: Rodney (7)
Backup catcher Mike Redmond's third single of the game snapped a 1-1 tie in the eighth, and rookie Tommy Hanson earned his first-ever BARB victory with seven strong innings as the Tornadoes (32-47) continued their recent above-.500 run against Eastern division clubs.
WORCESTER 2, LOS ANGELES 1
WP: J.P. Howell (4-2, 4.75)
LP: Dana Eveland (4-5, 5.11)
Jordan Zimmerman and Ryan Dempster each allowed a first-inning run, then dueled for seven innings before Jorge Cantu's eighth-inning single off Dana Eveland spelled doom for the visiting PF Flyers (34-45).
FRESNO 13, CASSELTON 3
WP: Mike Pelfrey (6-7, 5.66)
LP: Joe Saunders (4-6, 3.88)
Casey Kotchman had four hits and four RBI, and Bobby Abreu had three hits, including his 9th circuit shot of the season, as the Regulators (42-40) won their third straight and the ninth in their last ten games.

Was my FA signing also factored into the simulation?
Mr. Hatfield,
Just want to make sure the PTBN that jeff is getting isn't more than 2.00 right??? Cause that was the new rule you put into effect on my past dealing... also, remember can't be a Keeper or a FP as a PTBN!!!
Ron, you do realize you are the one who caused that rule, right? Everyone else abides by it. You think Jeff or myself wouldn't have thought of it? You think Hatfield would have let it go if the PTBN was over 2.00? You aren't very bright, my friend.
Or did you want one of those players, so you're trying to kill the deal?
Oh he is killing the deals...
wowowowowow jeff
this is a type of deal that keeps you from being competitve
great job andrew i give you props
you target the right owners (ron/jeff) that keeps your talent level plentiful
how is that solid?
marmol has never shown any ability to throw strikes consistently in the minors or majors, so i doubt he will figure it out. he has great stuff but no idea of the strike zone. sheets is a number one caliber starter, but he hasn't shown any ability to stay healthy consistently, and jeff already has a pitcher like that in carpenter. so the gamble he is taking i big. the ptbn better be some huge
he traded reyes who is a legit top 5 ss thats a more dynamic version of brian roberts and a solid left handed bat in lind who will hit for average with 25 HR and who will probably only get better. doesnt make any sense for him to do this deal
The deal made perfect sense both ways. Marmol has been alright with his control in the past--this is the first season is has been bad. I bet he does figure it out. In any case, it doesn't affect his stats in the current BARB season too much, and a top reliever is what Jeff needed. I needed an OF, and I got Lind (after trying to get other players). Reyes and Sheets are in the same position. If you read my blog (or if Hatfield actually posted anything from my press release on the main release) you can see the full explanation.
right?
