FROSTBITE FALLS 6, WORCESTER 1
WP: Cole Hamels (3-3, 4.92)
LP: Ryan Dempster (4-4, 3.83)
Cole Hamel’s tenth start of the season was easily his best, as the lefty took a shutout into the sixth before yielding back-to-back doubles by Carl Crawford and Derek Jeter for the Elims’ only run. Nate McLouth had four hits from the leadoff spot, including his fourth round-tripper of the season, to help the Squirrels (24-23) snap a five-game losing streak.
BROOKLYN 7, FRESNO 6
WP: Jon Lester (5-4, 3.10)
LP: Mike Pelfrey (2-4, 5.30)
SV: Rodriguez (10)
Brian McCann homered for the third straight contest, a three-run shot, and Jon Lester overcame a three-run first to earn the victory for the Moabs, who have won six straight games to vault into second place in the East (24-23), the longest winning streak of the year so far in BARB. The Regulators scored three times in the ninth to make things interesting, but Francisco Rodriguez got Jhonny Peralta to ground out with runners on.
In another piece of bad news, reports confirmed that 1B Carlos Delgado will need surgery and is likely gone for the year.
CASSELTON 5, DARWIN 4
WP: Johann Santana (4-3, 3.32)
LP: Kevin Gregg (2-1, 3.38)
Johann Santana gave up home runs to Adam LaRoche and Milton Bradley, but kept his pitch count down to hang around until the late innings, where the Horned Toads scored five runs off Finches relief pitching. Former closer J.J. Putz gave up two runs in the seventh and had to leave complaining of shoulder stiffness, while Kevin Gregg was simply too wild to be effective, wild-pitching home the go-ahead run. Santana would go all the way on 116 pitches to seal the deal for Casselton (21-16), which now leads the Central by two despite an offense ranked 11th in BARB.
BLACK MESA 5, TEXAS 1
WP: Ted Lilly (2-3, 6.13)
LP: Jeff Niemann (1-3, 6.26)
Catcher John Baker hit a pair of solo home runs and partnered with Ted Lilly on the lefty’s most effective start of the season as the hard-hitting Anomalies (22-19) kept pace in the West with a rare effective outing by a starting pitcher. A frustrated Alex Rodriguez was walked twice but otherwise went 0-for-3 to drop his average since coming off the DL to a pitiful .083.
