HYPOTHETICAL QUESTION

Hey, GM's, I'm curious. . . .

Joba Chamberlain is a hot prospect, definitely one of the better arms out there not yet drafted in our league.

Here's my question: think about the best middle infielder on your present ballclub. You know, the one who is still in the 20's and who's performing at an All-Star level. Would you trade one of those talents for Chamberlain, who's not guaranteed any particular role with the Yankees and is probably going to finish behind a hundred or so pitchers in overall value this year? Granted that he's a potential top-of-the-rotation ace in a couple of years, would you make that trade?

How about it, Brooklyn? Would you trade Chase Utley or Troy Tulowitski for Joba?

Whaddaya say, Worcester? How about Hanley Ramirez or Robinson Cano, heads-up for the young phenom?

What about Las Vegas? Would the Luchadores part with Jimmy Rollins to obtain Joba the Hutt?

If you were the Black Mesa GM, would you deal a Kevin Kouzmanoff, an Ian Kinsler, to get the next Yankee sensation?

Hey, Oakeyland: Steven Drew? Howie Kendrick? Or Joba?

Let's get more realistic: would you, Andrew Haynes, swap an infield prospect like Evan Longoria or Reid Brignac in order to get Chamberlain? World champion Chris Melkonian, if you had a young middle infielder that matched that description, would you so covet Joba that you'd swap one of them, heads-up?

Please sound off, if you don't mind.

Honestly, I would probably trade Brignac for Joba. Longoria? Not so much. The same goes for the starting middle infielders I have, both of whom have been All-Stars. And I really don't think I would do the deal, considering I already have a nice stable of young pitching that's better than Joba (Lincecum and Miller).

Nope. its easier to find starting pitching than a star ss.

besides, chamberlain will end up closing

I offered Jeff, and arguably Ron (allegedly acquiring the Joba), a boatload for that top pick. Both turned it down. Included in my offer was not a starter on my team, but a pick or two and a pitcher, since been traded. No way would I have traded Chase Utley, or Troy Tulowitzki. And for those who criticized me for holding on to my SS depth, I didn't pull a Ronald.

Wow, so many comments. FUNNY how someone thinks I'm drafting Joba as it is a draft time decision for me. AND WHO WOULD EVER trade an elite starter for an arm??? I WOULDN"T... only if I had a TOP 10 SS to replace this person and only if the deal I was getting was of good value... DUH. SO for those who assume I'm drafting Joba and that I traded Reyes for just a 1st rounder and never thought about a guy named Hardy to replace him, go back and think a little bit!

And eric, u offered me NOTHING for the 1st overall pick, just simply 2 picks for one... never a player or anything so don't go around saying that!

Really JJ Hardy is your replacement for Jose Reyes??? An 2 simple first round picks were still 2 first rounders. Also, don't criticize offers, I'm still hoping for a Carlos Lee- for 3 really good potential starters, type deal!

Bottom line: I'm skeptical that there is any player available in the draft that is worth a Jose Reyes. Presumably, because he's hyped to high heaven as a Yankee, Chamberlain will be among the first ten players picked.

But there will be plenty of quality arms in Rounds 2-4. In fact, I count four guys with 10 or more wins, seven guys with 15 or more saves, six setup guys with 50 or more innings with ERA's 3.10 or less. And those are all those with sizable major league stats, who are expected to fill roles, rather than prospects.

So, if this were all about getting Joba, someone overpaid.
