As is his wont, Arizona GM Ronald Melkonian has swung the 2008 season's first deal, once again confirming his reputation as the league's devil-may-care riverboat gambler. In this one, he sent three talented young players for Las Vegas OF Carlos Lee. Head Luchadore Charles Oliver expresses his satisfaction.
"Baffling," commented one anonymous reviewer of the Vegas-Arizona swap. "Puzzling. Mystifying. Doesn't he realize that there is no shortage of LF who will hit 30 HR or so, but that a top-level infield prospect is really hard to acquire? Or that both of the arms he sent may well be worth more than Lee on the open market by mid-season?"
Arizona, however, will hear none of that. A rumored trade with Frostbite Falls that will supposedly sends a pick, a prospect and four established players for an overrated pitcher and an over-the-hill infielder has not been confirmed as we go to press, but.....ah, but I see I've said too much.
