D-BACKS STEP UP

Arizona GM Ronald Melkonian, in a brief statement emailed to BARB GM's, acknowledged that there were procedural errors in recent negotiations with other clubs that had drawn the ire of the Commissioner's Office.

It was believed that league officials were concerned that leaking details of proposed deals was bordering on tampering.

The statement expressed Arizona's regret over the circumstances, and divulged that the D-Backs have voluntarily agreed to a reduction in their 2008 cap and to forfeit a draft pick to the Brooklyn Moabs, following a precedent set in 2007, when an error in a late 2006 trade led the Finches to voluntarily reduce their 2007 cap.

Commissioner Scott Hatfield said, "Arizona management has shown that they are willing to step up and act in the best interests of the league. Our office requested an apology, but GM Melkonian has gone beyond what was requested in order to signal his good faith to other owners. I regard this matter closed."

League officials also confirmed that Arizona's new blog, which can be found here, sets a new standard for information and presentation in BARB and urged other GM's to check it out.
