DOUBLEHEADER DAYS

Not two, but three BARB squads had doubleheaders on Game Day 77!

BLACK MESA 9, YUMA 2 (1st game of DH)
WP: Justin Verlander (6-2, 3.48)
LP: Jake Peavy (7-5, 3.89)

BLACK MESA 5, YUMA 4 (2nd game of DH)
WP: Jonathan Papelbon (2-2, 1.38)
LP: Rafael Soriano (6-4, 3.40)

Adam Dunn and Justin Morneau both homered in a seven-run seventh, and Justin Verlander fanned eight to propel the Anomalies to victory in the opening game of a doubleheader in Black Mesa. In the nightcap, Yuma rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the eighth, but Scott Rolen doubled with two out in the ninth and Mike Cameron followed with an RBI single, his third ‘ribbie’ of the game, as the Anomalies picked up two games in the standings against West-leading Yuma.

WORCESTER 11, S-MART 4 (1st game of DH)
WP: Chris Young (7-4, 4.09)
LP: Jose Valverde (2-4, 5.23)

S-MART 5, WORCESTER 4 (2nd game of DH)
WP: Fernando Rodney (3-5, 3.93)
LP: Chris Ray (3-1, 3.98)

Carl Crawford had three hits, and Joe Mauer homered and drove in five runs to back new ace Chris Young’s seven strong frames in the openers of a double dip in S-Mart. The home team managed a split, however, when Dan Uggla worked a walk to open the bottom of the ninth against Chris Ray, then was moved around and eventually scored on a sac fly by Edgar Encarnacion.

DARWIN 4, POTTSYLVANIA 0 (1st game of DH)
WP: Scott Kazmir (8-5, 3.68)
LP: Noah Lowry (5-8, 4.07)
SV: Putz (6)

POTTSYLVANIA 6, DARWIN 5 (2nd game, 10 innings)
WP: Brendan Donnelly (2-2, 6.49)
LP: Kyle Farnsworth (0-2, 2.15)

Scott Kazmir took a no-hitter into the seventh, where it was broken up with two out by Chad Tracy, but ended up combining with J.J. Putz on a three-hit shutout on the road in Pottsylvania. The home team managed a split, however, when Trevor Hoffman (4.43 ERA) blew a 5-3 lead in the ninth, then took advantage of a rare error by Placido Polanco leading off the tenth, where Manny Mora eventually scored with two out on So Taguchi’s ‘seeing-eye’ single.

FROSTBITE FALLS 8, LAS VEGAS 3
WP: Bronson Arroyo (8-5, 4.52)
LP: Ian Snell (4-7, 5.21)
SV: Nathan (17)

Mark Teahen went 3-for-3 and added his eighth homer of the year and Brad Hawpe also went deep to help back a mixed outing (5 IP, 10 H, but only 3 runs) by Bronson Arroyo, as the Squirrels picked up a half-game on East-leading Worcester. Matt Holliday had three hits in a losing cause for the host Luchadores.

ARIZONA 7, SAN JOSE 6
WP: Oscar Villareal (6-1, 5.92)
LP: Bobby Jenks (4-3, 4.55)

Barry Zito outpitched Daisuke Matsuzaka, but ‘Dice-K’s’ teammates got him off the hook with a furious four-run ninth off Bobby Jenks and Brad Hennesey, keyed by a two-run single by slumping Conor Jackson and another run-scoring safety by Mark Loretta, as the D-Backs rallied to edge visiting San Jose in their final at-bat.

OAKEYLAND 6, BROOKLYN 5 (10 innings)
WP: Francisco Cordero (4-2, 2.78)
LP: Francisco Rodriguez (1-3, 2.80)

Orlando Cabrera collected three doubles against Moabs pitching, including the game-winner in the bottom of the tenth against Brooklyn closer ‘K-Rod’, bailing out Joe Blanton, who allowed five runs and left the game trailing 5-3 before his teammates rallied.
