DOUBLEHEADER DAYS IN BARB

DARWIN 9, FROSTBITE FALLS 6 (1st game of DH)
WP: Scott Kazmir (4-3, 4.02)
LP: Ben Sheets (3-2, 3.66)

DARWIN 4, FROSTBITE FALLS 1 (2nd game of DH)
WP: Kelvim Escobar (5-1, 3.19)
LP: Chris Capuano (3-4, 5.00)
SV: Hoffman (11)

The Finches took a pair on the road in Frostbite Falls, getting a pair of homers in the opener from David Ortiz and a three-run shot by Chipper Jones off Daisuke Matzuzaka to ice the deal. In the nightcap, it was strong pitching by Kelvim Escobar (3 H, 7 IP) that put Darwin up early, and Trevor Hoffman finished off for his BARB-leading 11th save of the season.

LAS VEGAS 6, YUMA 5 (1st game of DH)
WP: Chuck James (6-0, 4.62)
LP: Rafael Soriano (1-1, 3.13)
SV: Rivera (10)

LAS VEGAS 5, YUMA 1 (2nd game of DH)
WP: Derek Lowe (4-2, 3.36)
LP: C.C. Sabathia (7-2, 2.82)

Derek Lowe took a shutout into the ninth before needing some relief help in the nightcap, a rather easy win with three hits apiece from Carlos Lee and Gary Matthews. The opener was much tighter, with good-luck charm Chuck James getting his sixth victory without a loss despite blowing a save opportunity in the bottom of the eighth. Fortunately, his ballclub had Mariano Rivera to pick up the pieces in the ninth after Jimmy Rollins tripled and scored to take the lead, as the Luchadores swept both halves of a doubleheader on the road in Yuma.

POTTSYLVANIA 13, ARIZONA 12
WP: Billy Wagner (3-3, 3.95)
LP: Zack Greinke (0-3, 5.44)

ARIZONA 13, POTTSYLVANIA 11
WP: Oscar Villareal (3-1, 3.76)
LP: Braden Looper (5-4, 4.74)
SV: Greinke (1)

When there are 49 runs scored in two games, it couldn’t have been good pitching that was responsible...and so it wasn’t. Two sub-.500 teams with rag-tag bullpens, the Creepers and the D-Backs, split a pair of wild contests in Pottsylvania. In the opener, rookie Matt Garza (the sixth Arizona pitcher) gave up two hits in relief of Zack Greinke, spoiling a late comeback that saw the D-Backs score seven runs in the last four innings. Greinke got a measure of revenge in the nightcap, however, finally bailing out reliever Francisco Cabrera, who combined with Neal Cotts to allow six late runs to the Creepers, who nearly rallied to win after being down 9-2 in the fourth.
