JUNE 4th
FROSTBITE FALLS 10, OAKLAND 5
WP: Paul Maholm (1-3, 5.40)
LP: Hideki Kiroda (6-3, 3.73)
SV: Frasor (3)
Albert Pujols hit a pair of home runs to (briefly) tie Pottsylvania slugger (and former teammate) Carlos Pena for the BARB lead in round-trippers, and fifth starter Paul Maholm finally got in the ‘W’ column in his ninth appearance of the year as the club’s fifth starter to best the United nine on the road in Oakland
WORCESTER 6, BROOKLYN 2
WP: Ryan Dempster (6-4, 4.93)
LP: Jon Lester (6-4, 3.79)
Ryan Dempster gave up a pair of long balls to Moabs 1B Ryan Howard the first two times the hulking slugger came to the plate, but was otherwise splendid, fanning 10 and benefiting from batterymate Joe Mauer, who hit a solo shot in the first and a two-run single in the third to lead the Eliminators attack. With his two shots, Howard increased his BARB-leading RBI total to 52 and took over sole possession of the league’s lead in HR, with 21.
POTTSYLVANIA 5, CASSELTON 2
WP: Mark Buerhle (5-2, 4.19)
LP: Carlos Zambrano (3-4, 2.75)
SV: Broxton (14)
The Creepers coaxed Carlos Zambrano into a meltdown, using a first-inning double steal to frustrate ‘Big Z’ and trigger a bout of wildness, scoring five early runs. Vetean Mark Buerhle lowered his ERA for the fifth straight start and even fanned six Horned Toads in six innings of work. With the loss, host Casselton and the defending division champs are tied for the division lead, with the Friars just a half-game back!
ST. FRANCIS, 6, ARIZONA 3
WP: Roy Oswalt (6-1, 3.47)
LP: Tommy Hanson (2-4, 4.91)
SV: Francisco (7)
Adam LaRoche keyed a three-run first with his sixth HR of the season, and coveted utility man Ben Zobrist (the subject of much trade discussion) walked three times to take the BARB lead in free passes with 45 as the Friars moved within a half-game of the Central Division leaders. The Thunder tired out Roy Oswalt in the fifth, loading the bases, but came up empty against reliever George Sherrill.
LOS ANGELES 6, BLACK MESA 3
WP: Tim Hudson (3-4, 3.98)
LP: Ricky Romero (1-7, 6.44)
SV: Dotel (2)
Octavio Dotel struck out Ian Kinsler and Ivan Rodriguez with the bases loaded, and Nick Swisher’s team-leading 11th blast of the year was one of four HR hit by the often-punchless Flyers, as Los Angeles won for the third time in their last four games. Starter Tim Hudson allowed two runs in the first, then held the Anomalies scoreless for the next six frames to drop his ERA under 4.00.
