CASSELTON 4, ST. FRANCIS 1
WP: Carlos Zambrano (2-2, 2.41)
LP: Roy Oswalt (4-1, 3.38)
SV: Dennis O’Day (1)
Carlos Zambrano took a two-hitter into the ninth on the way to outdueling previously-undefeated Roy Oswalt as the Horned Toads (12-13) won for the eighth time in their last ten games to get back into the Central Division race. Reliever Dennis O’Day picked up a rare save opportunity when Bobby Jenks rolled his ankle covering first base in the ninth, and was taken out as a precautionary measure.
POTTSYLVANIA 8, LOS ANGELES 2
WP: Armando Gallaraga (2-2, 5.92)
LP: Aaron Harang (1-3, 5.40)
Mired in a season-long slump and hitting below .200 at game time, Creepers 3B Aramis Ramirez went 4-for-5 with a HR and 3 RBI to lead the Pottsylvania attack behind fifth starter Armando Gallaraga, who turned in his best outing so far this year since being promoted to the rotation following the trade for Yovani Gallardo. 2B Aaron Hill, the player acquired for Gallardo, also went deep for the Creepers, smacking his fifth circuit shot of the season to help his club improve to a Central-leading 15-9 mark.
OAKLAND 9, DARWIN 1
WP: Hideki Kuroda (3-2, 4.19)
LP: Chad Billingsley (2-2, 2.61)
Nelson Cruz had four hits, including his team-leading ninth boundary blast of the campaign, and he and the rest of ‘United’ pounded out a season-high 17 hits to punish the host Finches, sending the Unnatural Selections (17-18) to their fourth straight loss and, possibly, out of contention in the demanding West.
FROSTBITE FALLS 8, YUMA 2
WP: Matt Garza (2-1, 2.53)
LP: David Price (1-2, 5.10)
Jayson Werth, Albert Pujols and Evan Longoria all took rookie lefthander David Price deep, and Matt Garza worked seven strong innings wthout allowing an earned run as the Squirrels (17-11) won their fourth straight contest to take command of the race in the surprisingly wide-open West. Despite the loss, Yuma (20-11) retained the league’s best record and the lead (by one game) in the West over the Murlocs.
WORCESTER 5, BLACK MESA 4
WP: Philip Hughes (2-1, 3.53)
LP: Takashi Saito (1-2, 4.18)
SV: Bell (7)
Jason Bay hit his BARB-leading 14th bomb of the year to get things going earlier, but it was Derek Jeter’s RBI single to score Billy Butler in the top of the ninth that allowed the Eliminators to hold on and win the rubber match of a three-game series on the road in Black Mesa. With the win, Worcester snaps a string of four straight series losses that have dropped them to 13-14, a poor mark but still only four games off Frostbite Falls’s pace.
MADTOWN 8, BROOKLYN 5
WP: Dan Wheeler (1-0, 1.93)
LP: Neftali Feliz (3-1, 1.85)
SV: Wilson (9)
Previously-unbeaten Neftali Feliz suffered his first-ever BARB setback as the Murlocs put together three hits in the eighth to snap a 5-5 tie, then added two more runs in the top of the ninth off relief aces Billy Wagner and Francisco Rodriguez to seal the deal. The Moabs, the hot team in the final month of play last year, have dropped 7 of 13 after beginning the year 7-2.
