Heard around the league....
LOS ANGELES 4, POTTSYLVANIA 3
WP: Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-1, 5.23)
LP: Ben Sheets (2-3, 5.67)
SV: Down (4)
Howie Kendrick had three hits, including a two-run poke to cap a three-run first against Creepers starter Ben Sheets, his second round-tripper of the campaign, and ‘Dice K’ took a shutout into the seventh before needing relief help as the Flyers (9-14 overall) won for the sixth time in their last ten games after a disastrous 0-7 start to the season.
ST. FRANCIS 8, CASSELTON 5
WP: Jamie Moyer (2-1, 4.11)
LP: Joe Saunders (2-1, 4.40)
Ageless Jamie Moyer took a shutout into the eighth before giving up a big fly to, of all people, Horned Toads closer Bobby Jenks getting some work in during a laugher. Moyer would be batted around in an eventually-failed attempt to get the complete-game win, but just-activated Joel Zumaya coming in to work the ninth.
BLACK MESA 13, WORCESTER 6
WP: Luis Perdomo (2-0, 8.36)
LP: Ryan Dempster (2-3, 5.76)
Neither Dempster nor Anomalies starter Wandy Rodriguez made it through the fifth, but that didn’t matter to the Radioactive Ones, who put on a hitting clinic against Eliminators pitching. Miguel Cabrera had four hits, Justin Morneau smacked his club-leading seventh bomb of the year, and even little Dustin Pedroia got in the act with a solo shot as the Anmalies won a slugfest. Rookie Luis Perdomo got the win with four-plus innings of so-so relief.
BROOKLYN 4, MADTOWN 3
WP: Ubaldo Jiminez (4-0, 2.42)
LP: Jeff Niemann (3-4, 3.60)
Hunter Pence gave the Murlocs a brief 2-1 lead in the second with his fourth shot of the season, but Utley and Howard both went deep to back the complete-game effort of Ubaldo Jiminez, who remained unbeaten despite giving up a season-high three runs. The emergence of Jiminez makes an already strong staff looking like the class of the league for the Moabs, but Brooklyn (just 14-14 in mid-May) is curiously inconsistent at the plate.
ARIZONA SIGNS AVILES
The Thunder confirmed that they have inked twice-released IF Mike Aviles to a minor-league deal. Aviles, a heralded pick of the Horned Toads in 2009, essentially rode the DL a year ago, leading to his release this off-season. Aviles briefly spent some time in the St. Francis system before team officials abruptly cancelled his contract without explanation.
