GAME DAY 21

DARWIN 4, FRESNO 2

WP: Josh Johnson (4-0, 3.90)
LP: Danny Haren (1-2, 3.96)
SV: Putz (3)

A previously-unhittable Danny Haren lost his shutout on Adam LaRoche’s fifth homer of the year leading off the eighth, and Chipper Jones later added a two-run double off reliever Chad Qualls as the Finches rallied for four runs to improve to 14-5, and make unheralded Josh Johnson the loop’s first four-game winner.

CASSELTON 7, TEXAS 4

WP: Ricky Nolasco (2-2, 4.62)
LP: Javier Vasquez (1-2, 4.00)
SV: Jenks (3)

James Loney doubled in the game’s first run, then added a two-run insurance single in the sixth as the Horned Toads (10-7) moved three games over .500 for the first time in their brief history, just one game behind Central-leading Pottsylvania. The Tornados, meanwhile, lost their fourth straight and for the eighth time in the last ten games. If ever a club needed a guy to get healthy, the Tornados need ‘A-Rod’ to return to the lineup. . .

POTTSYLVANIA 4, ST. FRANCIS 4

WP: Cliff Lee (3-1, 3.00)
LP: Edwin Jackson (1-1, 4.94)

Cliff Lee gave up a two-run single to Hank Blalock, but the Friars could not hold the 3-2 lead, as Ryan Ludwick hit a go-ahead shot of Jackson in the eighth. Ludwick’s team-leading eighth blast of the year put new starch in Lee’s collar, and the lefty did not allow a hit the rest of the way, striking out four of the last five St. Francis hitters for his first complete-game victory of the season.

YUMA 4, BROOKLYN 1

WP: Roy Halladay (3-0, 2.53)
LP: Fausto Carmona (0-1, 6.23)

Roy Halladay went the distance on 112 pitches, batterymate Russell Martin triggered a three-run fourth with a stolen base, and the Firebirds (10-11) continued their dance with .500 at the expense of the host Moabs. Rookie Justin Masterson threw four innings of hitless relief in a losing cause for Brooklyn, bringing his number of consecutive scoreless frames to fourteen, a BARB record for the start of a career.

BLACK MESA 6, FROSTBITE FALLS 4

WP: Takashi Saito (3-0, 1.06)
LP: Tim Lincecum (1-2, 3.65)
SV: Papelbon (5)

Vernon Wells’s fourth circuit shot of the year snapped a 3-3 tie in the sixth in a game marked by poor defensive play, as both Edwin Encarnacion and Mark DeRosa committed throwing errors contributing to Black Mesa rallies. The Anomalies (10-9) thereby stayed a game in front of Yuma for second place in the Western Division.

BARB EARNED RUN AVERAGE, LEADERS (minimum 20 IP)

Chad Billingsley, Darwin 1.21
Erik Bedard, Worcest 1.21
Felix Hernandez, FF 1.74

Slight typo here: "POTTSYLVANIA 4, ST. FRANCIS 4" though I'm guessing Pottsylvania won.

PS- I do appreciate the response in putting up my game updates.

Verlander had a 6.04 ERA in the second half of last season with a 4-8 record to boot. I dont want to see him shutting down the league for the first half.

no kidding, Verlander got rocked all of last year especially in the lonely second half.

But you fail to realize Matt, again, that Hatfield plays many of his games, thus the chances of his players having better numbers is greater...

Oh no! Justin Verlander has been pitching well for four straight starts! The world's gonna end!

Seriously guys? Let's wait a bit longer to see if he continues it. Even Barry Zito had a sub-1.50 ERA for a few starts earlier this season. I'm sure his stats will normalize.

I agree with Caskey, Verlander got rocked 8 out of 12 of his first starts last season.. I can't see how those stats would give him the great stats that he is getting now, if the league is partially based off of last years stats!
