GAME DAY 13

whoop there it is!

POTTSYLVANIA 2, FROSTBITE FALLS 1

WP: Braden Looper (1-0, 1.13)
LP: John Grabow (0-1, 4.50)
SV: Broxton (3)

Ryan Ludwick snapped a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the eighth with his team-leading fifth jack of the season, and Jonathan Broxton bobbed and weaved in relief of Brian Fuentes, getting Magglio Ordonez to ground sharply to Ryan Theriot, setting up a game-ending double play that kept the Creepers (6-5) atop the so-so Central in the early going. Frostbite Falls fell to 8-5, just two games off the pace in the East.

BLACK MESA 10, LAS VEGAS 5

WP: Wandy Rodriguez (1-2, 7.36)
LP: Francisco Liriano (0-3, 7.04)

Alex Gordon hit his first home run in the year to give the Luchadores a brief 4-3 lead, but came up lame running the bases in the fifth with what may prove to be a season-ending injury, a terrible blow to an already thin ballclub, as the visiting Anomalies continued to play ‘road warriors’ at the expense of the hapless Lounge Lizards, who committed three errors. Black Mesa is 6-3 on the road this year largely due to their offense.

WORCESTER 8, TEXAS 5

WP: Grant Balfour (2-0, 0.00)
LP: Jeff Niemann (0-1, 9.64)
SV: Morrow (6)

The Eliminators (10-3) became the first BARB club to reach ten wins, Brandon Morrow escaped a jam in the ninth to pick up his league-leading tenth save, and Hanley Ramirez and Mark Teixera both hit their third homers of the year off the Texas relief corps. The Tornados (3-7) have allowed 34 runs more than they’ve scored in the first two weeks of the season, and are itching to get All-World 3B Alex Rodriguez back in the fold.

DARWIN 3, YUMA 1

WP: Chad Billingsley (3-0, 1.64)
LP: Jake Peavy (1-1, 5.00)
SV: Putz (2)

Chad Billingsley became BARB’s first three-game winner despite surrendering nine hits, as the Yuma Firebirds hit into a pair of double plays and stranded twelve runners. Freebirds starter Jake Peavy pitched well, but came up short in the run support department as the Finches (9-4) extended their early-season lead in the West.

ST. FRANCIS 3, FRESNO 2

WP: Justin Verlander (2-1, 2.21)
LP: Josh Beckett (2-1, 1.80)
SV: Francisco (3)

Justin Verlander took a shutout into the seventh, and 2B Felipe Lopez had three hits, including a pair of run-scoring singles, as the Friars (4-7 overall) nevertheless found themselves in the hunt in the always-up-for-grabs Central with a win over visiting Fresno, which fell to four games out in the competitive East. Frank Francisco lowered his ERA to 10.38 by fanning David Wright with the bases loaded.

BROOKLYN 6, LOS ANGELES 2

WP: James Shields (1-0, 3.86)
LP: Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-2, 8.59)

'Dice-K' had trouble finding the plate (7 BB), and after the game the PF Flyers got the bad news as to why, as Los Angeles’s ace complained of shoulder soreness that was preventing him from ‘finishing’ his pitches. The Moabs (7-6) were quick to take advantage, moving over .500 thanks to Chase Utley, who not only hit his third home run of the year in the fifth off Matsuzaka, but managed a bases-loaded walk (and an RBI) against reliever Octavio Dotel to send the Flyers (4-7) to another loss at home.
