The Los Angeles PF Flyers have added a pair of right-handers by signing RHP Jeremy Jeffress and RHP Juan Cruz to minor-league contracts.
The Brooklyn Moabs have signed 3B Brandon Wood and RHP Tony Pena as AAA insurance with a pair of minor-league contracts.
The Worcester Eliminators have added C Mike Napoli, coveted by many clubs, as a backup catcher and will now have to decide whether they will take him north as a third backstop or assign him to their minor-league system.
The Yuma Firebirds have signed injured free agent starter Ben Sheets to a major-league contract, but he will begin the year on the disabled list. Once able to work in the majors, Sheets will be promoted to the parent club or else be cut. Meanwhile, the perennial Western Division contenders also inked versatile utilityman Chone Figgins to a minor-league deal, but observers expect that Figgins will make the ball club on Opening Day.
The defending world champion Frostbite Falls Flying Squirrels, meanwhile, will take a flyer on the legendary 'Pronk' by signing long-time Yuma DH Travis Hafner to a major-league contract, but he will almost certainly strictly DH with Carlos Pena and Albert Pujols on the club. Meanwhile, the Squirrels arguably upgraded their catching situation, plugging the loss of the released Mike Napoli with the left-handed hitting troublemaker A.J. Pierzynski, also inked to a major-league contract. Will A.J. play ahead of Victor Martinez? Their roster is...interesting. Expect a trade, in other words.
The Lexington Rebels have opened up the vault, spending $8 million for veteran left-hander Andy Pettite. While expensive, Lexington can not only afford his contract, they could also drop $4 million on the big reputation of OF Bobby Abreu and still remain somewhat under the league's $110 million cap. Lucky them!
Finally, the Darwin Finches added a pair of veteran infielders (2B/3B Aki Iwamura and SS Brendan Harris) to the system on minor-league contracts, raising speculation that they might still be in the market for catching help and willing to offer an established reliever for a backstop.
And the free agency signing period continues.....
