FROSTBITE FALLS 10, LAS VEGAS 7 (15 innings)
WP: Joakim Soria (2-4, 2.54)
LP: Chad Qualls (2-1, 1.93)
The Luchadores blew a 7-1 lead after seven innings, as the Squirrels scored three times in each of their last two at-bats to force extra innings, where they won in the fifteenth on Brad Hawpe’s second home run of the game.
Hawpe, who hit a three-run bomb off A.J. Burnett in the eighth, jacked another off Dan Wheeler with two aboard and two out in the top of the fifteenth (!), a 6-RBI performance, while Frostbite’s bullpen won their BARB-leading ninth game in extra frames, with Joakim Soria earning his keep with five-plus innings of scoreless ball.
BROOKLYN 6, OAKEYLAND 0
WP: Manny Parra (2-2, 3.82)
LP: Matt Garza (1-6, 4.50)
Manny Parra went all the way, scattering five hits in outlasting Matt Garza, who took a shutout into the seventh only to give up homers to Jhonny Peralta and Ken Griffey, who hit his 17th of the year and first since coming over in trade to cap a three-run eighth. The Moabs tacked on three more runs due to the wildness (3BB, 1 WP) of reliever Jamie Walker and went on to win their fourth straight, becoming the fourth BARB squad (after Darwin, Lexington and Yuma) to reach the 50-win plateau.
DARWIN 4, POTTSYLVANIA 2
WP: Oliver Perez (8-2, 2.72)
LP: Mark Buerhle (6-9, 3.82)
SV: Lyon (2)
The Finches committed a season-high six errors in the game, but somehow still managed to pull out a win against the light-hitting Creepers, as Oliver Perez pitched around most of the damage (allowing only three hits in eight frames) and Bradley, Berkman and Rowand all hitting home runs off a stingy, but not terribly well-supported Mark Buehrle. Darwin has won eight of their last ten to pull four-and-a-half games ahead of Brooklyn and Frostbite (tied for second place in the East), their largest lead of the season.
WORCESTER 11, S-MART 5
WP: Jeremy Guthrie (7-6, 2.99)
LP: Javier Vazquez (5-5, 3.44)
Hanley Ramirez, Derek Lee and Jermaine Dye each drove in three runs, with Dye hitting his 14th shot and his first of the season since coming over in a trade with Casselton as the Eliminators stayed within five games of the lead in the East with plenty of late scoring against Boom Stick bullpenners Brian Wilson, Alan Embree and Fernando Rodney, each of whom was whacked around pretty good.
BLACK MESA 6, CASSELTON 5
WP: Bryan Fuentes (3-3, 5.26)
LP: Brad Hennessey (1-3, 2.81)
Adrian Beltre’s team-leading 20th circuit shot was a grand slam that gave the Toads a 5-1 lead after two innings, but backup catcher Ronnie Paulino homered in each of his first two at-bats, Dustin Pedroia hit a rare blast over the wall to tied the game in the seventh, and Raul Ibanez hit a walkoff shot leading off the bottom of the ninth as the Anomalies avoided a drop into last place in the Western Division.
YUMA 3, LEXINGTON 0
WP: Roy Halladay (5-8, 3.51)
LP: Brandon Webb (9-6, 3.63)
Brandon Webb pitched well (8 IP, 8 H, 3 ER), but Halladay was better, scattering four hits on just 107 pitches for the shutout, his fifth complete game and second whitewash job of the season, as the Firebirds picked up a game on West-leading Lexington. Rookie Jay Bruce, who started out his time in BARB like a house on fire (6 RBI in his first 5 G), hit into two double plays and committed a throwing error that contributed to a Firebirds rally.
