Medlen was denied perfection by one runner
Righty settles for one
baserunner exactly one week after Price reaches perfection
Kris Medlen was paying attention May 11.
His teammate, left-handed pitcher David Price, threw the first perfect game in
BARB history in a 6-0 victory over the visiting Casselton Horned Toads.
May 18, Medlen went out on the mound and
faced a total of 28 Frostbite Falls batters—IN the opposition’s home park.
Medlen, one of the less-heralded of the
Yuma pitching staff, was perfect through five innings against the Flying
Squirrels’ powerful offense.
With one out in the sixth, Frostbite
shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria hit a slow hopper to his counterpart, Andrelton
Simmons. Simmons, as you may remember, made an outstanding play to close out
Price’s perfect game. This was more of a routine play, but he hurried the throw
with the speedy Hechavarria heading down the baseline. It bounced and caused
Joey Votto to bobble the ball as Hechavarria crossed the bag safely. Clearly a
runner, but clearly an error. no room for a hit from the hometown scorekeeper.
Medlen cruised through the rest of the
game, throwing 107 pitches and striking out the final two hitters to complete
the no-no.
Andrew McCutchen’s homer and two RBI
against Frostbite starter Carlos Villanueva provided half of the offense in
Yuma’s 4-0 victory to increase their West lead. Frostbite Falls, the East
leader for much of the first month of the season, continued to fall behind new
leader Worcester.
