TRADING DEADLINE APPROACHING

Owners have until midnight on Saturday, Oct. 4th, to make any trades that will affect the outcome of the 2009-10 season.

With that in mind, here are four possible trades that should be made:

Los Angeles RHP Joe Blanton (7-12, 4.44 with the Flyers) for
a couple of Brooklyn minor-league pitchers to be named

The Moabs have a lot of depth in their system on the mound, and Blanton's interior numbers on a bad team are quality. Blanton is no superstar, but he could give the Moabs some quality innings down the stretch with Roy Oswalt looking shaky. The Flyers, of course, need to continue to build their system. Having two more arms from the Moabs stable can't hurt, especially given Moabs GM Eric Caskey's reputation as a drafter of young talent.

Black Mesa OF Raul Ibanez (.272, 6 HR, 21 RBI in limited duty) and RHP Trevor Hoffman for Darwin RHP Steve Strasberg and Gil Meche

Darwin's bullpen needs an upgrade: Hoffie is a proven closer and (with Milton Bradley and Josh Hamilton doubtful) OF Raul Ibanez can definitely swing the bat. But Hoffman (42) and Ibanez (37) are unlikely to be significant players in the near future. Meche, shut down as a precaution, is a proven addition to any team's rotation and the Finches (to sweeten the deal) need to offer up the jewel of their system (Strasberg) is they expect to meet two needs with one deal.

Madtown SS Jhonny Peralta for a Casselton OF prospect

or

Madtown SS Jhonny Peralta for a Pottsylvania pitching prospect

Peralta's range has declined, but he can hit and he give an inconsistent Horned Toads lineup a little more thunder at a key position, not to mention keeping him away from division rival Pottsylvania, who would like to upgrade over the sticks of Ryan Theriot and Erick Aybar. In return, the Toads could part with one of the three best OF prospects in BARB (Jay Bruce, Carlos Gonzalez, Justin Upton). Or even Matt LaPorta! You don't get a chance to win a division title every day, and Peralta actually costs less than one of the prospects, so . . .

But, then, suppose the Creepers were willing to offer Jeff Smardjzia, James Paxton or Kyle Gibson? Arms like those don't grow on trees, and Theriot and Aybar would play better at 2B than at SS, anyway. Why not add some thunder? Again, you don't get a chance to win a division title every day, and Peralta actually costs less than one of the prospects, so . . .

Fresno IF Marco Scutaro for

Frostbite Falls OF Corey Hart

The Squirrels, searching for a playoff spot, are eager to move Hart and they could probably stand to add a versatile IF like Scutaro to back up Michael Young (trying to play through injuries) and J.J. Hardy (trying to keep his job). Scutaro's a nice spare part, but not a player to build around, and the Regulators are just about at the point where they have to cut bait on the current season.

Haha well I value my outfield prospects a little more than a mediocre ss at best. I might be willing to trade Bruce for a more top of the line ss but that sounds like an offseason trade.

Well, it's the owner who determines the value, not opinionated people like me. My point of view is that Casselton and Pottsylvania are neck-and-neck and one area both could upgrade is SS, and Peralta (while mediocre in the field) would be an upgrade at the plate over your current options. And, with Santana down and Jenks ending the season on the DL, you're going to need to score more runs to win, in my opinion. Whether it's worth it to make a run at a playoff spot that will cost you a prospect is your call.

In my opinion even if I make the playoffs I don't have a chance of winning it all. Therefore I'm not willing to ruin a strong foundation for a dreamlike attempt at a championship.

agreeded with landons argument

if strasburg were traded from darwin, it would be a terrible, ill concieved move. the goal is too win it all but you need to be realistic about your chances

I want a front-line starter and I will pay over the top for it. Note to Ron: that does not mean Porcello or Hanson straight up for Miguel Cabrera! And Blanton is not an upgrade over Baker, Shields, Jimenez, Lester or Oswalt. Heck, if you take out about a five week stretch, Jimenez might have won the NL Cy especially considering how stabilizing he was for the Rockies. If Blanton could strike out a couple more, he would be useful.
