FROSTBITE FALLS 11, DARWIN 7 (1st game of DH)
WP: Joakim Soria (4-3, 3.52)
LP: Oliver Perez (0-2, 4.96)
DARWIN 4, FROSTBITE FALLS 2 (2nd game of DH)
WP: Gil Meche (8-5, 3.98)
LP: Paul Maholm (9-8, 4.17)
SV: Gregg (9)
Jeff Francouer and Cristian Guzman had RBI singles as part of a four-run fourth, and Gil Meche took a shutout into the seventh before needing relief help as the Finches salvaged the nightcap of a twi-night doubleheader Down Under in Darwin. In the opener, struggling lefty B.J. Ryan made what should’ve been an 8-2 blowout interesting with an eighth-inning meltdown in relief of Joakim Soria, eventually leading to five runs, but the Squirrels pulled their wild teammate off the hook in the top of the ninth when Finch Killer Albert Pujols drilled his 26th homer of the year, a three-run shot, off rookie Max Scherzer.
WORCESTER 16, POTTSYLVANIA 5
WP: Jeremy Guthrie (7-7, 4.90)
LP: Yovanni Gallardo (8-7, 4.33)
Carl Crawford hit a pair of triples, Joe Mauer and Mark Teixeira both homered in a six-run second inning, and Jorge Cantu added four hits as the Eliminators sent Gallardo to his shortest outing of the year to maintain their narrow lead in the Eastern Division.
CASSELTON 11, LOS ANGELES 6
WP: Brad Ziegler (5-2, 2.53)
LP: Kiko Calero (1-2, 6.61)
SV: Jenks (17)
Both starters (Jordan Zimmerman, Joe Saunders) were mediocre at best, so this battle of the bullpens ended up turning on big hits by Derek Lee, who hit a three-run homer off Calero and later added a two-run double off rookie Brett Cecil, as the green-as-a-pool-table Flyers staff continues to take its lumps due a wave of injuries to their pitching.
MADTOWN 5, FRESNO 4
WP: Dan Wheeler (2-0, 2.20)
LP: Andy Pettite (2-5, 6.15)
SV: Rivera (18)
Chris Davis’s 17th homer of the year, a solo shot, snapped a 4-4 tie in the eighth, and the incomparable Mariano Rivera nailed down his 18th save in 18 chances this year, perfect through more than 100 games. Imagine how many saves Rivera would have this year with one of the perennial contenders in the Eastern Division!
BLACK MESA 4, BROOKLYN 0
WP: Kevin Millwood (8-6, 5.36)
LP: James Shields (7-7, 4.27)
Kevin Millwood needed 131 pitches to do it, but the Anomalies ace went all the way for the first time this season, scattering eight hits, while teammates Frankiln Guttierez and Vernon Wells had clutch hits to drive in runs against the Moabs’ James Shields.
ST. FRANCIS 9, TEXAS 0
WP: Jason Vargas (1-1, 1.67)
LP: Mat Latos (0-3, 6.86)
Rookie Jason Vargas scattered seven hits and was given a chance to finish the game with a high pitch count when his teammates scored four insurance runs in the ninth. Vargas, huffing and puffing, finished with his first-ever BARB shutout in only his third start of the year since being added to the Friars’ rotation. Rookie Alexei Ramirez helped lead the charge with his third boundary belt of the season.
