WORCESTER 2, S-MART 1
WP: Heath Bell (2-2, 7.04)
LP: John Maine (0-1, 1.14)
Hanley Ramirez hit a walkoff homer leading off the bottom of the ninth against Boom Sticks starter John Maine, who also allowed a solo shot to Alex Rios to tie the game in the seventh. Heath Bell picked up a win by getting just one hitter out, as the Eliminators reached the .500 mark (7-7) for the fourth time this season.
BLACK MESA 3, CASSELTON 2
WP: Andy Pettite (2-0, 1.32)
LP: Aaron Harang (0-2, 3.15)
SV: Papelbon (4)
The Anomalies built a 3-0 lead after six frames in a game repeatedly interrupted by rain delays, and their bullpen just held off a late charge in the ninth, with Jonathan Papelbon fanning C Geovany Soto for the game’s final out with two runners in scoring position. It was the third straight win for the Anomalies (10-7), who surprisingly are still among the leaders in the West.
YUMA 6, LEXINGTON 4
WP: Rafael Soriano (1-0, 2.35)
LP: Josh Beckett (1-1, 3.24)
SV: Corpas (4)
The Rebels stayed one hitter too long with ace Josh Beckett, as Nick Markakis hit a go-ahead double in the seventh, allowing the Firebirds to finally reach .500 (7-7) after probably the worst start in team history, and (as things would have it) just a game-and-a-half out of first. Rafael Soriano earned the win with a 1-2-3 seventh, and this time Manny Corpas did not blow the save, as he did twice in the first week of play.
One down note, however: pinch-runner Shane Victorino scored the tying run but came up lame in the process. The versatile fourth outfielder was placed on the disabled list and may not return until late May.
FROSTBITE FALLS 5, LAS VEGAS 4
WP: B.J. Ryan (1-0, 0.00)
LP: Kerry Wood (0-1, 2.84)
Kerry Wood gave up a two-out solo shot to lose the game to Victor Martinez, and just-activated lefty B.J. Ryan plowed through the bottom of Vegas’s lineup in the top of the ninth to earn the win in his first BARB action of the year after beginning the season on the DL. For the second straight contest, the Luchadores were able to put together a big inning against a Squirrels starter (four runs in the fourth against Felix Hernandez), only to watch their bullpen give up big flies in the ninth.
DARWIN 4, POTTSYLVANIA 3
WP: Jeremy Accardo (2-0, 0.00)
LP: Hideki Okajima (0-2, 4.05)
Carlos Guillen, bad hammy and all, beat out an infield hit and ended up with a stolen base on a busted hit-and-run, then scored the winning run on Placido Polanco’s clutch two-out single as the Finches rallied to win in their final at-bat Down Under. The visiting Creepers managed to tie the game 3-3 against Jonathan Broxton in their last two at-bats, a prodigious feat given the club’s BARB-low 41 runs scored in 14 games.
In more bad news for the Creepers, LHP Dontrelle Willis (0-2 with a 6.55 ERA in 3 starts in April) was placed on the disabled list. Who will assume his spot? Hard to say, with Chris Carpenter, Mark Mulder, Noah Lowry and Pedro Martinez already on the DL!
