BIG UNIT: BRILLIANT OR BRITTLE?

In his last 13 major-league starts, the 44-year-old Randy Johnson has a 3.56 ERA with a 11.3 K per 9 IP. Projected over 27 starts, Johnson can be expected to win 10-12 games and fan nearly 200 batters. It all comes down to health. Of all the off-season gambles made by BARB teams in picking up players with injury history (and almost all of us do), the signing of Johnson by the Finches carries the most upside.

This HAS to be a controversial point, so I expect some comments. Maybe you think some other player has more upside. Maybe you think there is no upside. Maybe you scorn Johnson completely, which seems likely, especially since the rest of you geniuses completely declined to bid on Johnson.....what's your reasoning?

Did Darwin pull off a coup in picking up His Surliness, or are the Finches kidding themselves that a guy with two back surgeries can make 20 or more starts?

Please leave comments!

Well, I think the one starter that has the MOST upside, especially long-term, who owns one of the worst injury histories in the majors, was RHP Rich Harden. When he takes the mound, he is ranked either one of the top 5 or 10 SP in baseball. He is almost unhittable when he pitches. I believe he is the biggest sleeper picked up in the draft! When healhty, he is a #1 starter! Johnson... I like him, but this should be his last year. Also, he is pricy, especially compared to Harden. If his back holds up and he shakes off rust, yeah it was a good sleeper pick like Harden, but I do believe Harden was the biggest SP picked up in the draft who has the most value over almost all SP in baseball... when healthy.
