Darwin—Trevor Hoffman, looking for his 32nd save, instead served up Richie Sexson’s second homer of the year, a three-run shot, as the visiting Boom Sticks scored five times in the top of the tenth to end the Finches’ season-high winning streak at ten games! Hoffman (2-4, 4.08) was charged for all of the runs, which began with walks to Gary Sheffield and Alex Rodriguez and went downhill from there. S-Mart C Rod Barajas added a run-scoring single in the tenth, his second of the game, to a three-run homer off Tom Glavine in the third, a career-high 5 RBI and the finishing touch to a 10-5, come-from-behind ‘spoiler’ of a win.
Alan Embree (2-8, 5.91) earned the victory with a scoreless tenth, manhandling Jeff Francouer, Chone Figgins and Mike Jacobs to seal the deal and knock the Finches a half-game behind Frostbite Falls with six games to play.
In other BARB action:
BLACK MESA 7, ARIZONA 5
WP: Takashi Saito (6-3, 1.63)
LP: Boof Bonser (0-3, 5.75)
The D-Backs rallied for five late runs to tie the game off Takashi Saito in the eighth, but could only watch helplessly as the second of Adam Dunn’s two homers on the day put the Anomalies back up, where Saito (settling into form) fanned three of the four Arizona hitters he saw in the ninth to nail it down. The D-Backs thus remained three games back with seven to play.
In an interesting note, Anomalies starter Jon Garland hit his third homer of the season in the second. Garland has only five hits on the year for a .100 average, but four of his hits were for extra-bases (1 double, 3 HR).
OAKEYLAND 7, WORCESTER 5
WP: Tim Hudson (11-15, 4.85)
LP: Chad Cordero (8-5, 3.42)
SV: Matsuzaka (2)
For the third straight time, snake-bit Chad Cordero coughed up the go-ahead runs late in the game to take the loss, as the Ballers scored two on the last of Jason Kendall’s four hits and the Ballers got a good outing in relief from ‘Dice-K’. It was the fourth straight loss for the Elims, who have sunk 3 ½ games out of first and have six games remaining on the schedule.
LAS VEGAS 5, BROOKLYN 2
WP: Derek Lowe (12-13, 4.15)
LP: Roy Oswalt (15-6, 3.42)
SV: Rivera (32)
The Luchadroes cashed in an error by Jhonny Peralta, scoring three times in a fifth keyed by Jimmy Rollins’ three-run double, and Derek Lowe induced a season-high three double plays with his sinker to place the Moabs (6 ½ out) on the brink of elimination for a playoff spot. Joel Zumaya came on in the seventh after a solo HR by Alfonso Soriano and fanned seven of the nine batters he faced, but the Luchadores had Mariano Rivera, who finished up 1-2-3 for his 32nd save.
SAN JOSE 6, YUMA 4
WP: Kevin Correia (2-2, 2.04)
LP: Rafael Soriano (7-9, 4.23)
Jermaine Dye tripled in a run off the crumbling Rafael Soriano in the top of the ninth, then came on to score on Emil Brown’s fielder’s choice as the downcast Rockets managed to topple the West leader in a sloppily-played (4 errors) affair that nevertheless saw the Firebird’s ‘magic number’ to clinch drop to 4 due to Arizona’s loss to the Anomalies.
FROSTBITE FALLS 14, POTTSYLVANIA 7
WP: Rich Hill (11-6, 5.25)
LP: Mike Mussina (4-12, 4.11)
Not as close as it looks, and that’s saying something. The Squirrels won their 89th game and third straight at the expense of the BARB-worst Creepers, who allowed two circuit shots in a seven-run seventh, one by BARB-leading Albert Pujols (his 52nd), and the other by hot-hitting Edwin Encarnacion, who hit #11, his sixth in the last ten games while regular DH Barry Bonds nurses a sore toe.
