VEGAS: MAGIC NUMBER DOWN TO 5

FROSTBITE FALLS 7, SAN JOSE 6 (1st game of DH)
WP: Bronson Arroyo (16-7, 4.16)
LP: Dave Bush (5-10, 5.54)
SV: Nathan (33)

SAN JOSE 6, FROSTBITE FALLS 4 (2nd game of DH)
WP: John Lackey (13-12, 3.60)
LP: Johann Santana (16-9, 3.27)
SV: Jenks (10)

Joe Nathan picked up his BARB-leading 33rd save of the season and Albert Pujols drew seven walks in a doubleheader split by the East-leading Squirrels, yet the club actually dropped the nightcap of their twin bill to lose a half-game in that division’s standings, as John Lackey denied Santana’s second attempt to become the loop’s first 17-game winner.

DARWIN 9, YUMA 1
WP: Scott Kazmir (15-9, 3.71)
LP: Roger Clemens (4-8, 3.50)

Scott Kazmir got an early Christmas present when his teammates scored five runs in the first two frames against an ineffective Clemens, the big blow being a three-run shot by Jeff Francouer, just his 11th of the year. Kazmir went eight strong innings, and then watched as Mark Mulder (just off the DL after over a year’s absence) pitched a scoreless ninth with an eight-run lead. Insiders doubt that Mulder will make the playoff roster, but if he’s eligible, the Finches would have a tough choice: take him, or cut him.

WORCESTER 4, ARIZONA 1
WP: Doug Davis (2-4, 7.34)
LP: Jered Weaver (6-14, 3.51)

Doug Davis had easily his best start in a Worcester ‘uni’, going all the way and taking a shutout into the eighth to best Weaver and the D-Backs. Carl Crawford, in a mini-slump that had seen his average dip all the way to .270, had three hits, including his ninth circuit shot of the season to lead the Eliminators offense. As for Weaver? He's got to be the best 6-14 pitcher in this league.

LAS VEGAS 15, S-MART 8
WP: Erwin Santana (6-9, 4.14)
LP: Nate Robertson (9-18, 4.30)

An old-fashioned slugfest, as the Luchadores forged a 6-4 lead after four frames, then exploded for seven more in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Leading the hit parade: Carlos Lee (who homered twice), Manny Ramirez (5 RBI) and Matt Holliday (4 hits, including a bases-clearing triple). Yes, Vegas certainly has the bats and with the win, lowered their ‘magic number’ to 5...any combination of Vegas win and Oakeyland losses totaling five will give GM Charlie Oliver his first divisional title.
