YUMA CHUGGING ALONG

YUMA 2, FROSTBITE FALLS 0
WP: C.C. Sabathia (9-3, 2.55)
LP: Johann Santana (7-4, 3.21)
SV: Otsuka (13)

C.C. Sabathia became BARB’s first pitcher to win nine games, outdueling Johann Santana despite another sensational performance from the Squirrels ace, who went eight and lowered his ERA, as the Firebirds cashed in a throwing error by Victor Martinez and a clutch two-run double by SS Miguel Tejada. With the win, Yuma improves to a league-best 38-21 mark.

ARIZONA 7, DARWIN 5 (14 innings)
WP: Mike Pelfrey (1-0, 3.38)
LP: Kyle Farnsworth (0-1, 3.97)
SV: Villareal (1)

Arizona’s much-maligned young pen rose to the occasion in this game, holding the Finches scoreless for five frames in extra innings, where Ivan Rodriguez homered off Chad Billingsley in the top of the 14th. D-Backs SS Jose Reyes also hit a pair of solo home runs for Arizona, which is 3-6 this season overall against the Finches.

LAS VEGAS 6, POTTSYLVANIA 1
WP: Brad Penny (4-4, 2.35)
LP: David Wells (2-8, 4.69)

Alfonso Soriano had three hits, including a pair of two-run homers, and Brad Penny pitched a complete game as the Central-leading Luchadores scattered eight hits and won rather handily on the road against the defending Central champs. It was the fifth straight win for the Flamingoes, who also extended their lead over slumping Pottsylvania.

BROOKLYN 7, SAN JOSE 5
WP: Mark Buehrle (7-3, 4.77)
LP: Barry Zito (3-6, 3.77)
SV: Rodriguez (12)
Michael Cuddyer had three hits, including a pair of run-scoring doubles, and Mark Buehrle took a 4-1 lead into the sixth, but needed some help to escape a late Rockets rally of himself and reliever Bob Wickman as the Moabs held on to win at home, reaching .500 (31-31) for the first time in nearly a month in the competitive East.

BLACK MESA 13, WORCESTER 4
WP: Curt Schilling (5-3, 3.88)
LP: Jeremy Sowers (6-5, 4.97)
Former Elims LF Hideki Matsui hit a two-run single off a wild (7 BB!) Jeremy Sowers, backup C Doug Mirabelli hit a grand slam off Ervin Santana in relief, and the Anomalies scored five runs in the fifth and six more in the seventh off three members of Worcester’s bullpen to stop a five-game losing streak.
