BROOKLYN 6, OAKLAND 5
WP: J.J. Putz (1-0, 0.00)
LP: Trevor Hoffman (1-4, 3.96)
Derek Lowe had a pair of singles and posted 11 strikeouts with his best sinker of the year to outduel Ubaldo Jiminez, who gave up a grand slam to Nelson Cruz, his 14th HR of the year. But it was all for naught: the United club let recently called-up reliever J.J. Putz escape from a bases-loaded jam in the top of the ninth that would've given them an insupperable lead, and in the bottom of the frame the visitors saw their bullpen let them down again, as Jeremy Affeldt and Trevor Hoffman combined to load the bases with two out and the score 5-4. Moabs 3B Ian Stewart, hitting just .172, then delivered a two-run, walkoff single.
With the win, the Moabs knocked Oakland below .500 and seven games out in the East, and it seems likely that the United ballclub will begin looking to next year. Brooklyn, meanwhile, will have to hope that recently-signed RF Corey Hart (so far 0-for-10 as a Moab) will provide some badly-needed offense with IF stalwarts Troy Tulowitzki and Chase Utley on the DL.
In other BARB action:
ARIZONA 2, ST. FRANCIS 0
WP: Javier Vazquez (4-4, 3.45)
LP: Gavin Floyd (5-7, 3.34)
Javier Vazquez went all the way, scattering seven hits for his BARB-leading third shutout of the season, while Miguel Montero (getting to play regularly with Matt Wieters struggling) doubled, scored and later added his 2nd HR of the year to pace the Thunder's offense. With the win, Arizona (34-32) moved into a tie with Pottsylvania for second in the Central, while the Friars dropped to fourth.
St. Francis made a series of moves to remain competitive after it was announced that reliever Joel Zumaya incurred a serious elbow injury that would end his season and, in fact, threatens his career. The Friars called up rookie LHP Clayton Richard with the idea of being a long man, and with Brandon Lyon and Frank Francisco in the mix for Zumaya's setup role now that free agent RHP Francisco Cordero has been given $3 million to close for the rest of the year. In addition, following the recent trade with Madtown that saw the departure of Cesar Izturis, the Friars called up utilityman Nick Punto.
(In case anyone is wondering, your Commissioner's personal record for most shutouts in one of these computer simulation seasons is eight, by Jimmy Key back in 1990....)
MADTOWN 20, DARWIN 2
WP: Jason Vargas (1-2, 6.98)
LP: Clayton Kershaw (5-7, 3.96)
Not a misprint.
WP: J.J. Putz (1-0, 0.00)

MADTOWN 20, DARWIN 2
WP: Jason Vargas (1-2, 6.98)
LP: Clayton Kershaw (5-7, 3.96)
Not a misprint.
Darwin lefthander Clayton Kershaw nearly doubled his ERA in his worst outing of the year, allowing ten earned runs while retiring just five hitters, and the rejuvenated Murlocs gave just- acquired LHP Jason Vargas a big bonus, punishing relievers Sean O'Sullivan and Hideki Okajima by tacking on 14 hits and 10 more runs, all earned, in a laugher. Pablo Sandoval had four hits, including a pair of solo HR, while Prince Fielder and Scott Rolen also added four hits each, including four of the eight RBI doubles whacked by the aroused Murloc lineup.
The Murlocs improved to 37-35, and the loss for Darwin means that the defending division champ has lost three straight and is in danger of falling out of the Western Division race entirely.
YUMA 4, BLACK MESA 3
WP: Roy Halladay (6-5, 3.57)
LP: Wandy Rodriguez (4-6, 4.43)
Roy Halladay went all the way for his BARB-leading third complete game of the year, holding off a late rally with help from LF Ryan Braun, who not only collected four hits on the day, but made a diving catch in the left-center gap to rob Franklin Guttierrez of what would've been a bases-clearing double in the eighth.
With the win, Yuma now has a two-and-a-half game lead in the West they have long dominated, and are believed to be looking to build on their traditional strength (starting pitching) to make a run at a third world title.
WORCESTER 7, FROSTBITE FALLS 1
WP: Ryan Dempster (8-4, 4.12)
LP: Tim Lincecum (8-5, 2.96)
Mark Teixeira homered from both sides of the plate and drove in five runs, including a two-run shot in the third against Tim Lincecum, and underrated Ryan Dempster pitched into the ninth for the first time this season, throwing 71 of 113 pitches for strikes in eight-plus frames before yielding to reliever Brandon Morrow, who fanned the last two Squirrels to help he and his teammates (now 42-30 and a half-game back) keep pace with Eastern Division-leading Brooklyn.
OF Delmon Young, just called up from AAA on a split contract, delivered a pair of singles and scored a run in his Worcester debut and is likely to get lots of playing time with neither rookie Nolan Reimold or former phenom Lastings Milledge producing much at the plate.
