GAME DAY 14

sigh

FRESNO 5, TEXAS 3

WP: Andy Pettite (1-0, 5.87)
LP: Alan Embree (0-1, 21.60)
SV: Cordero (1)

Curtis Granderson hit an RBI double to tie the game in the sixth, and then had the key hit in a three-run rally in the seventh as the Regulators (8-8) came back from a 2-0 deficit to hang a loss on the host Tornados, reaching the .500 mark for the first time this season in the competitive East.

DARWIN 11, LAS VEGAS 9 (1st game of DH)

WP: Kevin Gregg (1-0, 4.76)
LP: David Aardsma (0-1, 11.05)

DARWIN 4, LAS VEGAS 3 (2nd game of DH)

WP: Gil Meche (2-0, 3.00)
LP: A.J. Burnett (0-2, 3.07)
SV: Gregg (2)

The Finches swept both halves of a twinight doubleheader despite some poor fielding, but a serious injury to starting C Ryan Doumit put a damper on any clubhouse celebration, as the Unnatural Selections won their fourth straight at home, and in the process became the league’s first team to 12 wins. The Luchadores, meanwhile, pine for the prospect of a real GM and dropped their sixth straight to fall to 5-11.

In the opener, Zack Grienke took a 7-2 lead into the seventh, only to see his teammates commit three errors, putting two on for Manny Ramirez, who hit a game-tying three-run jack, his fourth of the season. But, in the carnage that followed, the Finches got an RBI triple in the seventh from Adam LaRoche and a game-winning boundary belt from Khalil Greene, his first of the year.
In the nightcap, Gil Meche took a shutout into the seventh but needed relief help after surrendering a two-run shot to Matt Holliday, his sixth of the year. But Kevin Gregg, the winner of Game 1, found something in the old soupbone to get the last four hitters. Doumit, who hit a sac fly in the second, may be lost for the year after breaking his right wrist on a tag play at home.

WORCESTER 8, ST. FRANCIS 5 (10 innings)

WP: Brandon Morrow (1-1, 3.60)
LP: Chris Ray (0-1, 8.31)

Former Eliminator Chris Ray served up Mark Teixeria’s fifth circuit shot of the year as part of a three-run tenth, and Brandon Morrow (who had let the Friars tie it in the ninth) put in a hitless frame of work as Worcester (11-5) won on the road in Kansas, surviving a poor outing by Wes Chamberlain (4.1 IP, 5 BB, 3 ER).

BROOKLYN 5, CASSELTON 2

WP: Roy Oswalt (2-2, 4.12)
LP: Ricky Nolasco (1-2, 5.19)

Jermaine Dye drove in four runs with three hits, including a bases-loaded double, and the Moabs (8-8) got another good outing from their ace Roy Oswalt, who took a 5-0 lead into the seventh before needing some relief help, as Brooklyn won on the road in Casselton. The Horned Toads, meanwhile, fell back to .500 (6-6), but still only two games behind Central-leading Pottsylvania.

LOS ANGELES 4, FROSTBITE FALLS 3 (11 innings)

WP: Kiki Calero (1-0, 3.33)
LP: Joe Nathan (0-2, 1.13)

Former Squirrel Luke Scott had a field day at the expense of Frostbite pitching, and it made the difference in a game that went eleven frames. Scott hit his first homer of the year leading off the third, roped an RBI single in the sixth to tie the score off Tim Lincecum, and crushed a Joe Nathan fastball with one down in the bottom of the eleventh as the Flyers (5-7) delighted their home fans with a rally against the defending world champs.
