Evan Longoria and Magglio Ordonez each had three hits, Chris Iannetta hit one out and rookie Armando Gallaraga got just enough relief help to get the ‘W’ as the Squirrels (7-3) stayed within one game of the Eastern lead.

Jered Weaver took a shutout into the seventh, and the host Luchadores (5-5) held on to beat the Firebirds (4-6) for the third time in their last four games, led by Matt Holliday, who hit an RBI double to go with his third homer of the season. Fifth starter Brian Bannister was drafted into a relief role as Vegas’s sixth hurler of the game.

Zack Grienke went the distance, scattering just three hits, and the Finches (7-3) took full advantage of three miscues by Anomalies IF Rafael Furcal and Ian Kinsler, The Finches were without the skills of injured SS Cristian Guzman, just placed on the DL.

A brilliant Eric Bedard took a shutout bid into the ninth only to be frustrated by Jeremy Hermida’s first homer of the season, but the Elims (8-2) held on to complete a three-hitter against the host Tornados (2-5) in Texas.

Hank Blalock hit his first homer of the year, a three-run shot off Brian Wilson that tied the score in the eighth, and reliever Francisco Corder never got an out in the bottom of the ninth as the Friars (3-5) put together back-to-back three-run innings to crush the visiting Regulators, in Kansas.

BROOKLYN 3, LOS ANGELES 1

LP: Justin Duscherer (0-2, 3.21)

Jermaine Dye hit his team-leading 5th HR of the year, and the Moabs (5-5) got three-plus innings of scoreless relief from their bullpen to frustrate the PF Flyers (3-5) on the road in Los Angeles. Just-activated OF B.J. Upton plated an insurance run in the sixth with a pinch-single.


2009
