Should Darwin be allowed to use IF Carlos Guillen or OF Rick Ankiel ? Their ML clubs kept them on their rosters, but did not play them this month. Guillen has back problems, and Ankiel finally had hernia surgery on the 17th.
Should Darwin be allowed to play them, or be forced to disable them?
YOU MAKE THE CALL!

no, i couldn't use vernon wells last year because of the same situation. just like ron shouldn't use brandon phillips
i would say no because they have injuries that would make them definatly not able to play, had their injuries been more ambigious then i would have said yes...
I agree with both but sort of disagree with Jeff. First, SH you must reason based on those who are no longer in contention! Second, if they would be disabled in JUNE then you can't use them now. Ballclubs do not have an incentive to disable now since they can expand rosters. But in JUNE, they have every reason to disable players who are confined to beds. Cannot use those players and shouldn't have in previous years either. Lastly when I hear the argument that Owner A used Player A last year in the same situation, we should have had the debate then!
Chris, Ron can't use Phillips anyway. He's on the 60-day DL.
I see the arguments from everyone, and although I still think Ankiel and Guillen should be allowed to play(because that's been the rule and it wouldn't be proper to change it in the middle of the season--or the heat of the pennant race, as it were) I am debating the merits of the arguments offered here and might come to a different conclusion after some thought.
Damn you could be a politician, is that OBAMA? Andrew, the rule has never been discussed, which seems to be forgotten. I feel strongly that the two players and others should not be used but it's not a deal-breaker.
I say no because there is a loop hole in our rule in BARB (IF a player in real life goes on the DL, then that player in BARB shall go on the DL as well... and vice verse), that must be addressed and fixed next season. Here's an example:
Josh Beckett hurt his arm in the MLB. He hasn't played for the Sox for two weeks, missing 10 games. He finially went on the DL...
Josh Beckett in BARB continues to play dispite him missing 10 games. He wins twice during this time. He now goes on the DL relative to the date in real life...
Thats the loop hole: we can play a hurt player dispite them missing games in real life. He just didn't miss a couple, he missed two starts of 32. Thats significant.
We do infact need to address this loop hole. I believe that if a pitcher misses starts or a player misses games, whether on or off the DL, his playing time in BARB should reflect that of real life; thus he misses games like he did in the MLB.
IF BARB's mission is to attempt to mirror the majors as close as possible, it only makes sense this loop hole is fixed.
SO going back to Rick Ankiel (Hatfield said he is disabling Guillen in an E-mail to me), because he missed a whole month and more, which is even more significant that missing 2 starts (my example), then his playing time in BARB should reflect that. If he is out, dipiste never being placed on the DL, then he is in BARB!
About Phillips, he was formally put on the DL. So he isn't playing...
HOWEVER: lets go back to my example...
Lets say Josh Beckett plays for the Royals, a non-contending team. He has an arm injury and they decide, during September, to end his season because there's no point to use him cause they aren't in the race (he's also their staff ace)...but they don't put him on the DL! Should he be allowed to play in BARB during September and October?
I think yes, he should be allowed (UNLESS OFFICIALLY BEING PUT ON THE DL), because if he was on the Red Sox, a contending team, he would of battled through whatever the injury was, unless it needed medical attention asap. In this case, he should pitch for his respected BARB team.
SO that's what I believe...
And NO Rick Ankiel doesn't fall into this because he needed surgery.
its not like a sprained ankle. no way.
