This guy's career could be over on his next pitch, but he's still fun to watch, and it's interesting to read a writer's attempt to wring some kind of meaning out of his career.
Hard to believe that yours truly drafted him out of AA back in 1989. That was, what, 291 wins and 4,730 strikeouts ago? Which means that RJ is averaging more than 14 wins and 230 K's a year, despite the fact that he missed much of three different seasons (1995, 2003 and 2007) during that span. Pro-rate his career per 35 starts and the numbers jump to 17.7 wins and 268 IP a year...
And, in the category of 'what-have-you-done-for-me-lately', the old lefty is 14-12 with a 3.97 ERA in his last 34 starts. In the next few weeks the Finches, who gambled and lost on Smoltz and Glavine, will see if the soon-to-be-45 (on Sept. 8th) Johnson has anything left in the tank.
