SOAPBOX MOMENT

A good time was had by all at our annual All-Star pizzafest, but interestingly enough there were no deals to announce, something of a first. Past mid-summer gatherings have always seemed to lead to trade talks, with hurriedly-scrawled scraps of paper thrust under your Commissioner's nose. There was some trade talks, but around 6:00, these discussions pretty much came to a halt when Josh Hamilton put on the most incredible exhibition of hitting I have ever seen. It was truly amazing. Really, all trade talk just...died, as we all sat speechless at what we were seeing.

The fact that Justin Morneau won the final round was anticlimatic in the extreme, and all but irrelevant. What fans will be talking about tomorrow, and for years to come, is what Hamilton did. And, when you think about it, the most remarkable thing is not the number of shots, or their tape-measure dimensions, but that a guy with Hamilton's past could even be there to take a cut on such a magnified stage.

This is going to sound corny, but Hamilton gives me hope. Life is hard, but redemption is possible. We can transcend our limitations and be better people, and help others be better people. We can use the gifts that we've been given, we can learn, and we can use our talents and the tools at our disposal....if we choose too. Sometimes, first making that right choice is the hardest thing to do.
