Office of the League Commissioner—On Game Day 23, the Eastern Division finally saw its highly competitive foursome locked into games with each other. As the loop’s most competitive and influential division, the East figures to put not one, but two clubs in the playoffs if the last five seasons are any guide, and so the opening salvo of Eastern rivalry figures to command great interest throughout the league.
FROSTBITE FALLS 6, DARWIN 5
WP: B.J. Ryan (2-0, 3.68)
LP: Kevin Gregg (2-2, 4.85)
SV: Nathan (6)
Chipper Jones hit a pair of home runs off Ben Sheets, but the host Squirrels rallied for three runs in the seventh off reliever Kevin Gregg to run their record to a league-best 16-6, while the visiting Finches fell to 13-8. After an eight-game winning streak in the second week of play, the Finches have only managed to play .500 ball as the strain of repeated injuries to their starting rotation has led to an overworked pen. Consecutive RBI singles by Jeff Kent, Victor Martinez and Hank Blalock capped the rally in the seventh, and Joe Nathan remained perfect (6-for-6) in save situations this year with a scoreless ninth.
WORCESTER 8, BROOKLYN 3
WP: Chris Young (2-1, 2.18)
LP: Ubaldo Jiminez (0-1, 5.23)
Derek Lee hit a two-run double as part of a five-run fifth, and lefties Scott Downs and George Sherrill combined for three-plus innings of hitless relief, as the Brothers Caskey renewed their rivalry with a convincing win for the Eliminators, the third straight win for Worcester (12-10), which moved two games above .500 for the first time this season. The Moabs (13-12), on the other hand, have lost four straight and did so this time despite a pair of solo home runs from backup catcher Benji Molina.
LAS VEGAS 6, POTTSYLVANIA 5
WP: Mariano Rivera (1-1, 3.21)
LP: Billy Wagner (1-1, 4.50)
The Luchadores got home runs from rookies Joey Votto and Jason Kubel as part of a four-run seventh, then hit back-to-back doubles with one out in the bottom of the ninth to beat Billy Wagner and run their club’s record to a Central-leading 11-13. Yes, I know it’s embarrassing to be able to lead a division with a losing record, but this is the Central we’re talking about. . .
BLACK MESA 10, LEXINGTON 2
WP: Todd Wellemeyer (2-3, 5.40)
LP: Dustin McGowan (0-2, 4.10)
Adam Dunn hit a pair of home runs and Kevin Youkilis added a three-run shot to support scrap heap acquisition Todd Wellemeyer, who worked seven solid innings in his best-ever BARB outing as the surprisingly-resilient Anomalies (13-12) stayed within two and a half games of West-leading Lexington and Yuma, who have each won 16 games.

why is sherrill and downs pitching three plus innings in relief? i have plenty of relievers and set my how i often i bring in a reliever to 4 or 5. they should not be picthing more than one inning.
Well, if one guy goes 1 1/3 and the other 1 2/3, that means they are replaced relatively quickly. Maybe they both used few pitches and had good matchups so they were able to stay in.
